This I found: cheers Smile

"Model and actress Brooke Shields will deliver the keynote address at Princeton’s Class Day ceremony on May 30, one of several Princeton commencement events that weekend. New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg will speak at the university’s May 29 baccalaureate ceremony.

While Bloomberg was invited by Princeton president Shirley Tilghman, Shields — one of the university’s most famous alumni — was nominated by members of the graduating class and selected by a student committee.

“We really thought it was important to have an (alumnus) represent our class, and our goal was to select someone who understood the Princeton experience,” said Nell Diamond, a senior on the selection committee.

Known for her starring roles in movies including “The Blue Lagoon” and “Pretty Baby,” Shields was famous long before she matriculated at Princeton. The actress, who will next play Morticia Addams on Broadway in “The Addams Family” musical, graduated with a degree in French in 1987. During her own graduation, at which she was escorted by a bodyguard, seniors decorated their class jackets with buttons offering a tongue-in-cheek message about their classmate. “Yes, I went to Princeton,” they read. “No, I never met her.”

For the Class of 2011, part of Shields’ appeal as a commencement speaker is that she has an intimate appreciation of their long nights spent awake — either struggling to finish a senior thesis or partying at Princeton’s eating clubs.

“She survived Princeton,” said Kristen Davila, another leader of the selection committee. “She’s one of us. She knows our ways.”

Princeton’s Baccalaureate, an interfaith service, takes place the Sunday before Class Day, an event organized by graduating seniors before their commencement ceremony. Since 1972, Baccalaureate has featured a speaker chosen by the president after a consultation with leaders of the graduating class.

Bloomberg, who was recommended by senior class officers based on his work in public service, business and philanthropy, also has a connection to the university, as the father of a Princeton graduate. A gift from the Bloomberg family contributed to the construction of Emma Bloomberg Hall, a dormitory named after the mayor’s daughter, who graduated in 2001.

“I think that the combination of Ms. Shields at Class Day and Mayor Bloomberg at Baccalaureate is really exciting for our commencement weekend, as it brings together two people from very different and diverse backgrounds,” said Nikhil Basu Trivedi, a senior who also helped lead the Class Day selection committee. “Combined, they have experience in philanthropy, business, politics, acting, modeling, and — most importantly — Princeton.”
